This session presents preliminary research findings exploring Second Life residents' learning and creative endeavors. This ethnographic study is based on two assumptions: (1) Second Life is a technologically sophisticated social context in which everyday residents develop skills and knowledge naturally. What can we learn from them about learning in a virtual world? and (2) as an institutionally situated educational technology, Second Life poses many challenges. What are they and how can we address them?

| Pre-requisites |
It's best if attendees know what Second Life is. They need not be experienced with it.

Remember the early days of 508 when JavaScript was a four-letter word? Fortunately, with the emergence of easy to use libraries and the adoption of web standards such as ARIA, accessible JavaScript has become not only feasible, but an important method for increasing usability of web content and applications. This session will go over some basic ways to use JavaScript to help improve the usability of web content without sacrificing accessibility.
|
| Pre-requisites |
Everyone of every skill level -- from JavaScript newbie to DOM Ninja -- is welcome. However, the presentation will be dealing with HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Given the short time frame, basic knowledge of those areas will be assumed by the presenter. You are welcome to participate without that knowledge, but there will not be available time during the presentation to cover questions on assumed knowledge.

| Session Description |
In professional lives and in education, portfolios have long been viewed as a way to document accomplishment. From artists portfolios to graduate portfolios these have been toted around in binders, with some left to sit on a dusty shelf, long forgotten. What if the portfolio became dynamic? What if important items could be securely stored, with cornerstone additions? What if these could be remixed and displayed in selective environments? This session will share emerging definitions of ePortfolios; show how and where and they are being used; describe the student-centered approach; explain the Portfolio Process (in teaching & learning) with examples and a brief film; and summarize linking artifacts to institutional goals for assessment and accreditation purposes.
